Expert systems for the Fourth Shift toolset

VisiBar, VisiWatch and IAMS — with an expert on call.

The Fourth Shift add-ons do the real work on the floor: the scan that moves inventory, the watcher that catches the late PO, the count that has to tie. We've written and rebuilt hundreds of these scripts and configurations — and we've built an AI expert on the documentation, the script library and our own conventions, so the answer to "why did it do that?" takes minutes instead of a support ticket.

Three tools, one discipline

Make the right action the easy action.

Every one of these is a place where a wrong scan, a missed event or a mistyped count becomes wrong inventory in a plant that runs around the clock. The job is to make the correct path the path of least resistance.

VISIBAR

Barcode data collection that matches how material moves

Receipts, moves, issues, picks, labor and completions — scripted between the scanner and the ERP so the standard transaction fits the real flow.

  • Substitution and conversion logic (interlayer handling, paint-line conversion, KG receipts, bin logic)
  • Guarded prompts — back and exit handled on every GET, lot and serial captured before the write
  • Recordset patterns (RSOPEN / RSPOPULATE / RSCLOSE) and stored-procedure calls done safely
  • Every script proven in a sandbox against production-shaped data before a controlled deployment
VISIWATCH

Event monitoring that catches it before the shift ends

Late POs, negative on-hand, stuck work orders, orders shipped without an invoice, a price that changed overnight. Watched continuously, alerted to the right person, escalated when ignored.

  • Conditions written against the real tables, not the report you happen to have
  • Alerts tuned so people keep reading them — no 3 a.m. noise
  • Escalation paths and evidence links so the alert is actionable
  • Feeds the same exception lists Clairvient ranks by business impact
IAMS

Physical inventory that ties — and gets smaller every year

Planning, tag or sheet setup, count-day support, variance review and posting. Reconciled to root cause so the same variances don't come back next year.

  • Count planning and cutoff discipline so the count and the GL agree on what "on hand" means
  • Variance analysis by item, location and reason — with the transaction trail behind each one
  • A path from annual shutdown counts to a cycle-count program you can defend to auditors
  • Clean posting back to Fourth Shift with the reconciliation artifact kept
The expert system

An assistant that has read every manual and every script.

Fourth Shift knowledge is leaving plants faster than it's being replaced. The people who wrote your VisiBar scripts are retiring; the vendor's documentation was last updated when they still shipped it on CD. So we built the expert we wished we'd had in 1998.

What it knows. The VisiBar, VisiWatch and IAMS product documentation. A library of working scripts and configurations from real plants. Our own conventions: how prompts are guarded, how recordsets are handled, which transaction contracts are safe to call from a scanner and which aren't.

What it does. Explains what an existing script actually does. Reviews a change before it goes to sandbox. Drafts a new script to a spec. Diagnoses an error message with the reference cited — so you can check it, not just trust it.

What it never does. Touch production. It has no write path to Fourth Shift. Every change still goes through the sandbox-to-production protocol, because that discipline is the whole point.

How a change ships

Sandbox to production, every time.

This is the protocol a South African wheel plant now follows for every VisiBar change, three shifts a day. It's boring on purpose.

01

Spec

The transaction, the prompts, the guards, the failure cases — written down before a line is changed.

02

Sandbox

Built and run against a copy of production data with the real items, lots and locations that break things.

03

Reconcile

Test transactions traced through to inventory and GL. If the numbers don't tie, it doesn't ship.

04

Deploy & watch

Controlled release, VisiWatch on the new path for the first shifts, and the change documented for whoever comes next.

Straight answers

Questions about the toolset.

What exactly is the 'expert system'?
A private AI assistant built on the product documentation for VisiBar, VisiWatch and IAMS, a library of working scripts and configurations, and twenty-five years of our own field conventions for the Fourth Shift toolset. It answers questions, reviews and drafts scripts, and diagnoses errors in plain English with the reference cited. We use it on every engagement, and it can be made available to your team as part of a support arrangement.
Does it touch our production system?
No. It reads and reasons; it doesn't write. Every script or configuration change still goes through a sandbox against production-shaped data and a controlled deployment. On a live shop floor, "it should work" isn't a deployment plan.
We have scripts nobody understands anymore. Can you help?
That's the most common starting point. We'll document what the scripts actually do, flag the ones with guarded prompts missing or substitution logic that no longer matches the plant, and rebuild the ones that need it — with a sandbox-to-production protocol your team keeps using after we're gone.
Can you run our physical inventory?
We can plan it, prep IAMS for it, be on the floor or on the line during the count, and reconcile the variances to root cause afterward — so next year's count is smaller and the one after that is a cycle-count program instead of a shutdown.
Let's talk

Which tool is giving you trouble?

A VisiBar script that errors on lot-tracked items, a VisiWatch alert that fires at 3 a.m. for nothing, a physical inventory that took a week and still didn't tie. Tell us which one and what it's doing.

You'll get a straight answer and a tight scope. If we can't help, we'll tell you that too — and usually who can.

No newsletter. No drip sequence. Just a reply from us.

Got it — thanks.

We read every one of these ourselves. Expect a reply within one business day. If it's urgent, email us directly at dan.mindlin@mindlinconsulting.com.
